Why VOLUME?

Demand, ambition, brand.

We didn't set out to build a B2B marketing agency.

So how did we end up with VOLUME - part agency, part consultancy and focused entirely on working with B2B brands?

The answer lies in demand, ambition, and brand.

We actually set out to start up and build a business called VIDA, a venture builder with the mission to help grow the next generation of media businesses.

VIDA is developing programs and building partnerships to identify, fund, and grow diverse revenues for the founders of startup and scaleup media brands. These include businesses creating content for, and with, the communities that make up the passion economy, entrepreneurs creating content focused on critical global issues, and the people developing new media formats and channels to serve underrepresented audiences.

VIDA, despite the challenges of Brexit and Covid-19, has successfully invested in, and helped to grow media startups, by building an ecosystem of partners and investors, and it continues to grow which you can learn more about here.

But on our journey over the past 18 months, it became clear that there was demand from some of the partners, investors and scaleups in our growing ecosystem for services that didn't quite fit the VIDA model, or our brand purpose.

Now, like all startups, the team at VIDA has had to balance the purity of our purpose, with the pragmatic reality of income generation, and so we delivered a project, developing content strategy for an innovation consultancy, which was rolled out and has given them a clear voice, and engaging, ownable formats.

Next, a B2B media brand with funding and a year of trading asked us to help them with brand and community building, which we did on a consultancy basis, leading to a significant shift in strategy, and audience growth.

And then, we were asked by a SaaS business targeting SMEs – that is already doing all the right things in its lead gen and performance marketing - to help them develop a personality and a manifesto, to build their brand and stand out in social.

None of these projects started with a brief.

They were very, very different in nature.

But they were all B2B projects and they had one further, crucial thing in common that made them irresistible; ambition.

As one client told us “most B2B marketing comms are incredibly dull, or functional at best. I’d like us to do better.”

Which meant doing things differently.

First we drew on our networks of B2B marketing talent, experts and innovators who, like us were motivated by the ambition of doing something better. We then developed a simple process which meant that defining the problems, developing the answers and delivering the work was inspiring and liberating for all involved, with our clients contributing directly, and actually enjoying the experience.

In short, it was nothing like working in, or with, an agency.

We decided it had legs, but it didn't really fit with our vision for the VIDA brand.

So we decided (on a Zoom call, naturally) to develop a new one and VOLUME was born – next generation media and marketing for B2B brands, delivered in a modern way.
